Technical SEO Audit: The Complete Guide (2026)
Learn how to run a technical SEO audit that actually improves rankings — covering crawlability, indexation, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, structured data, and site architecture.
Technical SEO issues don't announce themselves. A noindex tag accidentally pushed to production, a redirect chain adding 1.5 seconds to load time, a canonical pointing to the wrong URL after a site migration — none of these show up in your content or design. They show up weeks later as a ranking plateau, or months later as a traffic drop that analytics can't explain.
A technical SEO audit is how you surface these invisible problems before they become expensive ones. This guide covers the full process: what to audit, what tools to use, how to run it efficiently, and how to prioritize what you find.
What a technical SEO audit actually is#
A technical SEO audit is a systematic evaluation of a website's infrastructure — the underneath of the site that determines whether search engines can find, crawl, render, and rank your pages.
It's distinct from two other common audit types that teams conflate it with:
Content audits review what pages say — whether content matches search intent, whether articles are comprehensive, whether there's keyword cannibalization across the site. A content audit asks "is this content good enough to rank?"
Backlink audits review who links to you — whether your link profile looks natural, whether toxic links need disavowal, whether you're building authority in the right topic areas.
A technical SEO audit asks a different question entirely: can search engines even reach and process your pages?
All the content quality and backlink authority in the world doesn't matter if Googlebot can't crawl a page, if the page is noindexed, if it takes 8 seconds to load, or if canonical tags point to the wrong URL. Technical audits find those problems.
The six areas a technical audit covers#
- Crawlability and indexation — can Googlebot find and index your pages?
- On-page technical elements — are title tags, meta descriptions, canonical tags, and heading structure correct?
- Site performance and Core Web Vitals — does the page load fast enough to meet Google's ranking thresholds?
- Mobile usability — does the mobile version of the site work correctly? (Google crawls your mobile version first)
- Structured data — is schema markup implemented correctly and eligible for rich results?
- Site architecture and internal linking — is link equity flowing to the pages that need it?
Tools for a technical SEO audit#
You don't need an expensive enterprise platform to run a thorough technical audit. The core toolkit:
Screaming Frog SEO Spider#
The standard crawler for on-page technical data. A site crawl with Screaming Frog surfaces missing title tags, duplicate meta descriptions, redirect chains, broken internal links, canonical tag errors, missing alt text, and pages with thin content — all in one pass.

Google Search Console#

- Index > Pages: shows what Google has indexed, what it's excluded, and why (noindexed, crawled but not indexed, server errors)
- Index > Sitemaps: shows whether your sitemap is being read and how many URLs Google found vs. indexed
- Experience > Core Web Vitals: field data from real Chrome users — more accurate than lab tools for identifying mobile performance problems
- Settings > Crawl Stats: server response codes, crawl frequency, and download size distribution — helps identify server errors and bandwidth-constrained crawling
PageSpeed Insights#
Google's tool for Core Web Vitals and performance analysis. Run it on your homepage, your most important landing pages, and a sample of your blog posts — performance often varies significantly across page types.
PageSpeed Insights shows both lab data (simulated on Google's servers) and field data from Chrome User Experience Report. Prioritize fixing issues in the field data — those affect actual users and the ranking signal.
Google's Rich Results Test#
Validates your structured data markup and confirms whether a page is eligible for rich results in Google Search. Run it on any page where you've implemented schema — especially FAQ, Article, Product, or Review markup.
Log file analysis (for large sites)#
For sites over 10,000 pages, access to server log files shows exactly which URLs Googlebot is crawling, at what frequency, and what response codes it's getting. Log files reveal crawl budget problems that site crawlers can't show — like Googlebot spending 60% of its crawl budget on paginated archive pages instead of your priority content.
When to run a technical SEO audit#
Scheduled audits#
Run a full technical audit every 3–6 months as baseline maintenance. Most sites accumulate technical debt faster than teams realize — new content gets published, CMS plugins get updated, templates change, and each change can introduce new issues.
For large sites (10,000+ pages), a monthly crawl with automated comparison against the previous month helps catch regressions before they compound.
Event-triggered audits#
Trigger an immediate audit after:
Site migrations — moving domains, switching from HTTP to HTTPS, changing URL structures, or migrating CMS platforms are the highest-risk technical events. A botched migration can wipe out years of accumulated ranking signal. Run the audit before launch (on staging), immediately after launch, and again 2–4 weeks later.
Significant traffic drops — before investigating content or link causes, rule out the technical explanations first. Check immediately for: newly introduced noindex tags, robots.txt changes that block important URLs, server errors driving 5xx response codes, and sitemap issues. These are the fastest-to-fix causes of sudden traffic drops.
Major site rebuilds — new template rollouts, redesigns, or CMS upgrades all change how pages render. What works in dev doesn't always work in production.
Rapid content scaling — adding hundreds of new pages can surface crawl budget issues, internal linking gaps, and canonical misconfigurations that don't appear on smaller sites.
How to run a technical SEO audit: the process#
Step 1: Define scope and priority pages#
Before crawling anything, define what success looks like. Which pages matter most to your business? These are your priority pages — the ones you'll prioritize fixing even if lower-priority pages have more issues.
For most sites, priority pages are:
- Homepage
- Key product or feature pages
- Top-traffic content (check Google Analytics)
- Pages currently sitting in positions 4–20 that could benefit from technical improvements
- Any page currently not ranking despite strong content and backlinks
Keep this list short and specific. It becomes your quality check at the end: "did we fix the issues that matter for our priority pages?"
Step 2: Crawl the full site#
Run Screaming Frog (or equivalent) on your full site. For large sites, configure the crawler to extract custom data elements — JavaScript-rendered content, structured data, specific meta tags.
What you're looking for in the crawl output:
- HTTP status codes (4xx errors, 5xx errors, redirect chains)
- Missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions
- Missing or incorrect canonical tags
- Missing H1 tags or multiple H1s per page
- Pages with very low word count (potential thin content)
- Broken internal links
- Images missing alt text
- Redirect chains (A → B → C instead of A → C)
Export the full URL list with these attributes. You'll use it as the foundation for the rest of the audit.
Step 3: Pull Google Search Console data#
Export three datasets from Google Search Console:

Index coverage report — every URL in the "Not indexed" category needs investigation. Why did Google find it but choose not to index it? "Crawled — currently not indexed" is a content quality signal. "Excluded by noindex tag" requires checking whether that noindex is intentional.

Core Web Vitals field data — specifically the mobile report. Desktop passes at much higher rates than mobile. Pages in the "Poor" or "Needs Improvement" buckets are the ones to prioritize.

Crawl stats — look at the response code breakdown. Any server errors (5xx) are crawl waste. A high proportion of "Redirects" in the crawl stats suggests your internal linking has redirect chains that should be updated to point directly to the final URL.
Step 4: Test performance on key pages#
Run PageSpeed Insights on your top 10 pages by organic traffic plus any pages you're actively trying to rank. Note which Core Web Vitals metrics are failing and by how much.
The three metrics:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how long until the main content loads. Good: under 2.5 seconds. The most common failure point: only 62% of sites pass LCP, according to DebugBear's analysis of HTTP Archive data.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how responsive the page is to user interaction throughout the session. Good: under 200ms. This replaced FID in March 2024.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how much page elements shift unexpectedly during load. Good: under 0.1.
As of 2025, approximately 52% of mobile sites fail at least one Core Web Vitals metric, according to HTTP Archive data — meaning passing CWV is still a genuine differentiator.
Step 5: Validate structured data#
Run Google's Rich Results Test on pages where you've implemented schema. Common schema types to validate:

Schema errors don't cause ranking penalties, but they prevent eligibility for rich results. Validation errors are usually minor (missing recommended fields) rather than critical, but they're worth correcting.
Step 6: Audit site architecture and internal linking#
Use your Screaming Frog crawl to identify:
Orphaned pages — URLs with zero internal links pointing to them. These pages receive no link equity and may not be crawled regularly. Sort the URL list by inlink count and investigate any pages with 0 or 1 inlinks that you want to rank.
Crawl depth distribution — check how many clicks separate priority pages from the homepage. Pages beyond 4–5 clicks are at risk of infrequent crawling on large sites. Screaming Frog shows crawl depth in the "Crawl Analysis" tab.
Internal links pointing to redirected URLs — these waste a redirect hop. Export your internal link data and filter for links where the destination returns a 301 or 302 rather than a 200.
Canonical chain issues — a page canonicalized to another page that is itself canonicalized elsewhere creates a chain that Google may not follow to the intended destination.

Crawlability and indexation: the highest-stakes checks#
Crawlability and indexation problems are the most urgent issues to resolve because they prevent pages from appearing in search results at all. Content quality and backlink authority are irrelevant if Google can't index the page.
Robots.txt#
Your robots.txt file tells Googlebot which URLs to avoid. According to the 2024 Web Almanac, 8.4% of desktop sites have invalid robots.txt files — most are malformed syntax, but some have Disallow rules that accidentally block important content.
Review yours with two questions: Are any Disallow rules blocking URLs you want indexed? Are CSS or JavaScript files being blocked that are needed to render pages correctly? Google needs to render pages to understand their content — blocking rendering resources can cause Google to see a page differently from how users see it.
Noindex tags#
A page with <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> is explicitly excluded from Google's index. This is the correct setting for thin pages (tag archives, paginated page 2+, thank-you pages after form submissions) — but it's frequently left on pages after staging deployments or CMS template changes.
In Google Search Console, the "Excluded by 'noindex' tag" report in the Index Coverage section shows every URL Google found with a noindex directive. Cross-reference this list against your intended indexable pages.
Canonical tags#
Canonical tags tell Google which URL is the "official" version of a page when multiple URLs serve similar content. According to the 2024 Web Almanac, only 65% of websites correctly implement canonical tags — leaving a third of sites with canonicalization problems that can fragment ranking signals across duplicate URLs.
Common canonical errors: canonicals pointing to 301-redirected URLs (update to point to the final destination), canonicals on pagination pages incorrectly pointing to page 1 (only correct if page 1 genuinely contains all the same content), missing canonical on indexable pages (every indexable page should have a self-referencing canonical).
XML sitemaps#
Your sitemap should be a clean list of URLs you want Google to index — 200 status codes, noindex-free, canonicalized to themselves. A sitemap contaminated with 404 pages, noindexed URLs, or redirected URLs tells Google something about your site's overall quality. Clean it with each major audit.
Core Web Vitals: where performance meets ranking#
Google officially confirmed Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal in 2021 and updated the signal in March 2024 when INP replaced FID. As of 2025, failing Core Web Vitals can cause pages to rank below otherwise similar pages that pass.
LCP: fix the largest element first#
LCP is the most commonly failed metric. The fix usually lives in one of three places:
- Hero images — unoptimized or not preloaded. Add a
rel="preload"hint to the LCP image to tell the browser to fetch it early. - Slow server response (TTFB) — if the server takes over 1 second to respond, LCP can't be good. Address with server-side caching or a CDN with edge caching.
- Render-blocking JavaScript — scripts that block the main thread delay when the browser can paint anything. Defer non-critical JS with
loading="lazy"or move scripts to the bottom of the page.
INP: minimize main thread blocking#
INP failures mean the page is unresponsive to user interactions. The culprit is almost always JavaScript — either first-party code with expensive event handlers or third-party scripts (analytics, chat widgets, ad scripts) that block the main thread. Use Chrome DevTools Performance panel to identify which scripts are consuming the most main thread time.
CLS: reserve space for dynamic content#
CLS failures usually come from images without explicit width and height attributes (the browser doesn't know how much space to reserve), or dynamic content (ads, cookie banners, chat widgets) that injects above existing content after load. Fix by specifying dimensions on images and reserving space for dynamic elements with CSS.
Mobile usability: not just a check, the primary crawl#
Google uses mobile-first indexing — it crawls and indexes the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version. This means issues on mobile aren't secondary problems; they're your primary SEO problems.
Critical mobile checks beyond Core Web Vitals:
Content parity — does the mobile version of each page show all the same content as the desktop version? Accordions, tabs, and hidden elements that are visible on desktop but require JavaScript interaction on mobile may not be indexed. Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool with "Test Live URL" on a mobile user agent to confirm what Google sees on mobile.
Viewport meta tag — every page needs <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">. Without it, browsers render the page at desktop width and scale it down, causing the "content wider than screen" mobile usability error.
Tap target sizes — buttons and links should be at least 48×48 pixels with enough spacing to prevent mis-taps. Google's PageSpeed Insights flags small tap targets as a usability warning.
Interstitials — full-screen popups that appear immediately on page load on mobile (email capture, app download banners) trigger Google's intrusive interstitial penalty. A banner occupying a reasonable screen portion that can be dismissed is fine. A full-screen overlay on the first page view on mobile is not.
Site architecture: making link equity work#
Site architecture determines how ranking authority (link equity) distributes from your homepage and externally-linked pages to your content. Even the best content can underperform if the internal link structure doesn't route authority to it.
Prioritize hub pages#
Pillar pages and key category pages are where external link equity lands and redistributes. Each one should link explicitly to every cluster page in its topic group. If a cluster page doesn't receive a link from its pillar page, it's relying entirely on whatever direct links it has — typically far fewer.
Audit this manually for each pillar: open the page, search for every cluster slug in the body content, and confirm each one is linked. This is tedious but high-impact on sites that have grown organically without a deliberate linking strategy.
Fix redirect chains in internal links#
When you 301-redirect a page, the links pointing to the old URL should be updated to point directly to the new URL. Each redirect hop loses a small amount of equity and adds latency. A site that's been through several migrations can have internal links going through two or three redirects before reaching the actual content. A Screaming Frog crawl with the "Follow Internal Redirects" option disabled will surface these.
Flatten crawl depth for priority content#
If priority pages (your main landing pages, pillar content) are accessible only through 5+ clicks from the homepage, add links to them from higher-authority pages or from the main navigation. The goal isn't an arbitrary click-depth number — it's ensuring that Googlebot's natural link-following behavior reliably reaches every important page.
Structured data: the schema checklist#
Structured data doesn't directly improve rankings, but it affects how your listings appear in search results and how AI models parse and cite your content.
The types worth implementing on a content site:
Article / BlogPosting on every editorial post. Include datePublished, dateModified, author (with @type: Person and sameAs pointing to a credible author profile), and publisher.
FAQPage on pages with FAQ sections. Note that Google deprecated FAQ rich results for most commercial sites in August 2023 — they no longer appear in standard organic SERPs. However, FAQ schema still helps AI models parse Q&A content and cite it in AI-generated answers, which matters for generative engine optimization.
BreadcrumbList on interior pages. Often shows up as breadcrumb navigation in organic search results below the URL, improving CTR by signaling where in the site the page lives.
Organization on the homepage. Establishes entity identity for your brand — used by Google for Knowledge Panel eligibility and by AI models when attributing claims to sources.
Validate all schema with Google's Rich Results Test after implementation, and re-validate after any template changes that might affect the schema generation.
Security and HTTPS#
HTTPS has been a Google ranking signal since 2014. Every page should serve over HTTPS, HTTP requests should 301-redirect to HTTPS in a single hop, and the SSL certificate should be valid and auto-renewing.
Check for mixed content — an HTTPS page that loads resources (images, scripts, stylesheets) over HTTP. Browsers block or warn on mixed content; it also breaks the HTTPS security model. Chrome DevTools console on key pages will surface mixed content warnings immediately.
An expired SSL certificate kills traffic faster than almost any other technical issue — browsers show full-screen security warnings that prevent most users from proceeding. Confirm auto-renewal is configured with your certificate provider or hosting platform.
Prioritizing the findings#
A technical audit on a medium-sized site will usually surface 30–80 individual issues. Not all of them matter equally. Use this triage framework:
Fix within 24 hours (blocking traffic):
- Pages you intend to rank are noindexed or blocked by robots.txt
- SSL certificate expired or generating browser warnings
- Server returning 5xx errors on key pages
- Sitemap returning 404 or 500
- Redirect loops
Fix within 2 weeks (actively hurting rankings):
- Core Web Vitals failures on highest-traffic pages (INP, LCP especially)
- Canonical tags pointing to wrong URLs on priority pages
- Redirect chains on pages with significant backlinks
- Orphaned pages that should be receiving traffic
- Mobile-specific content gaps
Fix in next audit cycle (low priority, clean-up):
- Missing meta descriptions on low-traffic pages
- Missing alt text on images with no ranking value
- Minor schema validation warnings (recommended fields, not required)
- Thin content on pages with no ranking signals
The rule: if an issue is blocking indexation or actively affecting Core Web Vitals scores on priority pages, it's urgent. Everything else fits into scheduled maintenance cycles.
Building a recurring technical audit process#
A one-time audit improves your current situation. A recurring process prevents technical debt from accumulating in the first place.
Continuous monitoring#
Keep these three Google Search Console reports on a weekly dashboard:
- Index > Pages — watch for sudden increases in "Not indexed" counts, which can indicate newly introduced noindex tags or robots.txt changes
- Experience > Core Web Vitals — mobile CWV field data updates weekly; any new "Poor" URLs need immediate investigation
- Coverage errors — server errors (5xx) trending up means something is broken at the server level
Pre-publish checks#
Build a brief technical checklist into your content publishing workflow: does the new page have a canonical, H1, title tag, and meta description? Does it link to its pillar page? Is it included in the sitemap? This costs 3 minutes per post and prevents the most common issues at the source.
Post-change audits#
Any site change that touches templates, URL patterns, or CMS configuration should trigger a targeted crawl within 48 hours. The most common source of new technical issues isn't gradual drift — it's a CMS update or template change that inadvertently changes how canonical tags or robots meta tags are generated across hundreds of pages at once.
